Advanced Roadmaps Part 1: From Planning Pain to Planning Panache

Jira, Agile, Project Management

Untitled-1453

Hey there, people of the interwebs! It's me again, your fave Atlassian fan-nerd. I'm coming at you today with a bit of my origin story. Hang on, it's not one of those my mother formed me out of clay type deals. Nope. My career was birthed in none other than the universe of Product Management, a whirling, expanding existence filled with roadmaps, the incessant search for "the fundamental why," and endless expectation setting.

I can recall sometime in the early 2010's, navigating the sunsetting of GreenHopper (Atlassian's Agile precursor), and ecstatically welcoming what we know today as boards. I hadn't even begun to dream up wanting—let alone demanding—more from Atlassian at that time because boards and backlogs were revolutionary! So when Atlassian sniffed out the hustle and felt the pain from our roadmap and capacity planning misery and then came up with a solution, it was all I could do to keep from drooling like a Pavlovian dog at dinnertime.

Again, I use the word "misery" when it comes to planning and roadmaps on purpose, it's no exaggeration. Can you relate to the following list of concerns?

  • I need to know if we are on track and when we can take on more work.
  • I need to be able to communicate to different stakeholder audiences the status of our teams' work across the organization.
  • I can't see or visualize what all of my teams are working on anywhere in Jira.
  • I need some legs to stand on when explaining the reason for the slipped schedule.
  • Shouldn't I be able to use Jira to clearly show that our teams are over-utilized and that our scope creep problem is real?
  • Not another spreadsheet...no! If all the data is in Jira, why is it so hard to answer these questions? There's got to be a better way!

If any of these thoughts have ever crossed your mind, then yes. Yes, you do relate.

The potential to ease your pain is important to me because I've been there, and it stinks. So check it out... Atlassian wrote this killer article on Advanced Roadmaps, which inspired me to elaborate for your educational entertainment.

From here on out, you'll see a snippet from their article, followed by my own real-world color commentary, in this Advanced Roadmaps blog series. Tuck in and enjoy.
