Confession: I’m having a hard time finding the motivation to write a blog post on par with our content marketing strategy tonight. It’s a dandy of a strategy, don’t get me wrong. But let’s be real, it ain’t got the “huevos” to outdo the pounding reality of what’s on my heart, given the gravity of the wounded, volatile and overall pandemic mess we’re living in today.
And to be honest, with an opening like that, I’m not sure I even need to worry too much about the words that follow because chances are my editor’s exact, very sarcastic response right now is, “Atta-girl, Tracy... great way to rope in your readers, deal ’em an off-brand downer right off the top. Can’t wait to slather the interwebs with this doozie."
Too bad! This won’t just be your typical Atlassian-good-on-ya-mate tidbit, review, or knowledge share. Not tonight.
Tonight, more precisely, is the wee morning hours of June 1st.
One week since the death of George Floyd, and mere hours since the countless demonstrations, protests, peaceful and otherwise, that took place all over the U.S. this weekend. My heart is heavy; there’s no better way to say it. Heavy with hurt for those who have died, for those who have lost loved ones, for those who have experienced less-than treatment, who have to worry about looking or being a certain way to avoid humiliation, violence, hate, and discrimination.
Yeah, but I’ve got a deadline. Tick tock, Tracy. Oh yeah, that. My job. Do that. Job = Good.
Even though I may not like everything about my job (who really enjoys paperwork and deadlines), it would serve me well to find my motivation. I could start by acknowledging that I certainly enjoy having a job. Right? Good start. Ok. But that’s still not making it a ton easier to hit this deadline. Better yet, what I need is to keep digging. To find some inspiration. My job is, after all, my favorite nerdy thing about me.
So here goes:
I get to help Atlassian clients from all over the U.S. uncover their best fit, unique combo configurations, solutions, and yadda-yadda (yes, that’s a technical term...) that get their teams humming. I’m talking collaborating, tracking, and getting s#!t done. Quite literally, their work lives are never the same again... and for the better. It’s brilliant, and I love getting to be a part of making this happen.... because... people.
See what I did there? I mean, I know I’m not going to be the only person out there tomorrow morning at work or otherwise who is going to have to figure out a way to literally and figuratively show up and keep going. It’s not always easy.
So if you remember nothing else from this off-brand, late night blog post, please remember this: Keep your heart and mind open. Open so that you can acknowledge what’s going on for you - hurt, devastation, annoyance, anger--or whatever it is. And open so that you can also find your motivation, enthusiasm, and what you care most about.
Mine is people.
That’s right. People. You. Me. People. We’re all we got. We’re all that really matters. Whether it be those who hate or are hated, those who love or are loved, we are all we have. So be kind out there... to yourself, for yourself, and for everyone. Because we all deserve to experience kindness, no matter our struggle.
